Why Grow Plantains in Kenya?

Kenya's food system leans on one crop more than it can safely bear. Here's the problem with that — and why Plantain Boss Ltd believes plantains are the way forward.

The Problem: Kenya's Maize Dependency


Maize covers 40–48.5% of Kenya's 6.6 million hectares of arable land, and up to 85% of Kenyans rely on it as a single staple — ugali — according to the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development. Climate and environmental fragility

Continuous maize cropping is projected to degrade up to 20–50% of topsoil over the coming decades, according to the European Journal of Social Science. A National Institutes of Health study found detectable aflatoxin in 97% of sampled Kenyan maize flour, with contamination worse in the informal sector. Aflatoxin exposure is linked to 26% of the global liver cancer burden, and a 2004 outbreak in Eastern Kenya reached a 40% case fatality rate, with 125 deaths recorded.

Weak support for farm labor

Small-scale farmers produce roughly 75–78% of Kenya's maize output, relying heavily on family and casual labor. Per the International Labour Organization, this workforce largely sits in the informal sector — without health insurance, pensions, or other formal protections.
